Photobiomodulation and the Vagus Nerve: Can Red Light Therapy Support Nervous System Regulation?

One increasingly popular wellness technology is photobiomodulation, commonly known as red light therapy or near-infrared light therapy.

Photobiomodulation uses controlled wavelengths of red or near-infrared light to influence cellular activity. It has been studied in relation to inflammation, pain, circulation, tissue recovery and neurological health. Researchers believe some of its effects may involve mitochondrial activity and cellular signalling. However, photobiomodulation should not be confused with electrical vagus nerve stimulation, and more research is needed to determine whether externally applied light can directly stimulate the vagus nerve.

What Is Photobiomodulation?

Photobiomodulation, often abbreviated as PBM, involves exposing the body to low-intensity red or near-infrared light.

Unlike surgical lasers, photobiomodulation is generally designed to deliver a non-heating dose of light energy. The light may be absorbed by cellular structures involved in energy production and redox signalling, potentially influencing processes associated with circulation, inflammation and tissue repair. The response depends on several factors, including:

  • the wavelength of light

  • the intensity of the device

  • the treatment duration

  • the distance between the device and the body

  • the treatment location

  • the total amount of energy delivered

This means that effective photobiomodulation is not simply about using a red light for a certain number of seconds. The device specifications and treatment protocol matter.

What Does the Vagus Nerve Do?

The vagus nerve is a major communication pathway between the brain and many internal organs. It travels from the brainstem through the neck and into the chest and abdomen.

It is involved in functions associated with the parasympathetic nervous system, including:

  • heart-rate regulation

  • digestion and gut motility

  • breathing-related regulation

  • immune and inflammatory signalling

  • communication between the gut and brain

  • recovery after stress

The vagus nerve carries signals in both directions. Many vagal fibres carry sensory information from the body toward the brain, while other fibres carry signals from the brain back toward the organs.

Can Red Light Therapy Directly Stimulate the Vagus Nerve?

This remains an emerging area of research.

The vagus nerve passes through the neck, but it lies beneath skin, muscle and connective tissue and is positioned close to major blood vessels and other important structures. Applying red or near-infrared light over the neck may affect the surrounding tissue, circulation or cellular activity, but there is currently limited clinical evidence proving that a wearable red light device directly activates the vagus nerve in the same way as an electrical vagus nerve stimulator.

It is therefore more accurate to say:

Photobiomodulation may support cellular energy, circulation, tissue recovery and broader nervous system wellness. Direct vagus nerve stimulation through externally applied light has not yet been firmly established.

Is Photobiomodulation the Same as Vagus Nerve Stimulation?

No. These are different interventions.

Established vagus nerve stimulation generally uses controlled electrical signals. Some devices are surgically implanted, while non-invasive options may deliver electrical stimulation through the ear or the side of the neck.

These methods are commonly described as:

  • transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation

  • transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation

  • implanted vagus nerve stimulation

Researchers continue to study the effectiveness, safety and optimal treatment settings for non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation. Photobiomodulation uses light rather than electrical current and should not automatically be described as equivalent to these treatments.

How May Red Light Therapy Support Nervous System Regulation?

Photobiomodulation may support nervous system wellness indirectly through several possible mechanisms.

Supporting cellular energy

Red and near-infrared light may influence mitochondrial processes involved in cellular energy production. Supporting cellular function may be relevant for tissues recovering from physical or metabolic stress.

Supporting recovery and circulation

Photobiomodulation has been studied for applications involving circulation, inflammation, pain and tissue repair. Reduced discomfort or muscular tension may make it easier for some people to relax, sleep and participate in nervous system regulation practices.

Supporting a calming wellness routine

Using a photobiomodulation device in a quiet setting may be incorporated into a broader relaxation routine involving slow breathing, meditation or heart-rate-variability biofeedback.

The relaxation experience should not be confused with proof that the vagus nerve has been directly stimulated. However, combining appropriate wellness technologies with evidence-informed regulation practices may support a person’s overall recovery plan.

Red Light Therapy for Stress and Recovery in Calgary

People living and working in Calgary may experience long workdays, demanding schedules, disrupted sleep, seasonal changes and ongoing stress. These factors can affect energy, recovery and the ability to shift out of a prolonged stress response.

Photobiomodulation may be considered as one part of a broader nervous system wellness plan. Depending on the individual’s needs, the plan may also include:

  • HeartMath or heart-rate-variability biofeedback

  • LENS neurofeedback

  • psychological counselling

  • holistic nutritional support

  • paced breathing and relaxation exercises

  • sleep and recovery strategies

  • movement and physical activity

  • medical assessment when symptoms are persistent

No single treatment is appropriate for everyone. The best approach considers the person’s symptoms, health history, goals and any medical conditions.

Is Red Light Therapy Safe Around the Neck?

Photobiomodulation is non-invasive, but safe use still depends on the device, treatment location and individual health history.

Speak with an appropriate healthcare professional before using a red light device near the neck, head or chest if you have:

  • an implanted electrical or medical device

  • a heart rhythm condition

  • a history of seizures

  • thyroid disease or unexplained neck swelling

  • active cancer in or near the treatment area

  • photosensitivity

  • medications that increase sensitivity to light

  • a significant neurological or cardiovascular condition

  • pregnancy or another condition requiring individualized medical guidance

Follow the manufacturer’s treatment instructions and use protective eyewear when required. Do not place a device over the side of the neck based solely on an anatomical diagram or an unverified social-media protocol.

The Bottom Line

Photobiomodulation is a promising light-based wellness technology that may influence cellular energy, circulation, inflammation and recovery. The vagus nerve is an important part of the body’s stress-regulation and recovery systems, but red light therapy and electrical vagus nerve stimulation are not the same treatment.

Current evidence does not establish that briefly applying red or near-infrared light to the neck directly activates the vagus nerve. The most responsible approach is to view photobiomodulation as a potential tool for supporting broader cellular and nervous system wellness rather than as a guaranteed method of vagus nerve stimulation.
